Background of the Study:
Intra-party conflicts have increasingly emerged as critical factors undermining governance effectiveness at the grassroots level. In Orumba North Local Government Area, Anambra State, internal disputes within political parties have led to fragmentation and reduced policy coherence. These conflicts often manifest in infighting over leadership, policy directions, and resource allocation, which in turn impede the implementation of effective governance strategies (Umeh, 2023). The turbulent internal dynamics within parties not only disrupt decision-making processes but also weaken the overall institutional capacity to deliver public services. Recent studies suggest that such conflicts exacerbate public distrust and hinder the development of sustainable local governance models (Chukwu, 2024). This study seeks to explore the underlying causes of intra-party conflicts and their direct impact on governance effectiveness, emphasizing the need for internal reconciliation and stronger party discipline. By analyzing case-specific evidence from Orumba North, the research contributes to a broader understanding of how internal party dynamics can either facilitate or obstruct democratic governance at the local level (Nwachukwu, 2025).

Statement of the Problem:
In Orumba North, intra-party conflicts have significantly compromised governance effectiveness, leading to fragmented policy implementation and diminished public service delivery. The continuous power struggles and internal disagreements within major political parties have created an environment of uncertainty, thereby affecting developmental projects and community programs. Such conflicts not only weaken the overall capacity of local governments but also diminish public trust in political institutions. Addressing these internal challenges is imperative for ensuring that governance at the grassroots is both effective and responsive to community needs (Okonkwo, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the impact of intra-party conflicts on governance effectiveness in Orumba North.

  2. To identify the key causes of internal party conflicts.

  3. To recommend measures to resolve intra-party disputes and improve governance.

Research Questions:

  1. How do intra-party conflicts affect governance effectiveness in Orumba North?

  2. What are the primary causes of these conflicts?

  3. What measures can mitigate the negative impact of intra-party disputes on governance?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. H₁: Intra-party conflicts significantly reduce governance effectiveness in Orumba North.

  2. H₂: Leadership disputes are a major cause of intra-party conflicts.

  3. H₃: Effective conflict resolution mechanisms will improve governance outcomes.

Significance of the Study:
This study is significant as it examines the detrimental effects of intra-party conflicts on local governance, providing insights into how internal party dynamics can disrupt service delivery and policy implementation. The recommendations offered will assist political parties and local government officials in developing strategies to resolve conflicts and enhance governance efficiency (Ibekwe, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Intra-party Conflicts: Disputes and disagreements within a political party.

  2. Governance Effectiveness: The ability of government to implement policies and deliver services efficiently.

  3. Grassroots Governance: The administration and management of local-level governmental activities.
